Titanium is a metal chemical element with chemical symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is located in the 4th cycle and IVB group in the periodic table of chemical elements. It is a silvery white transition metal, which is characterized by light weight, high strength, metallic luster and resistance to wet chlorine corrosion.

The strength of titanium machined parts increases with the decrease of temperature, but the plasticity decreases little. It still has good ductility and toughness at low temperature, which is suitable for use at ultra-low temperature.

titanium machined parts can be used in liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen engines, or as ultra-low temperature containers and storage tanks on manned spacecraft. Titanium machined parts still maintain good mechanical properties at about 500 ℃. When the aircraft speed reaches 2.7 times the speed of sound, the surface temperature of the aircraft mechanism reaches 230 ℃, aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy can no longer be used, while titanium alloy can meet the requirements.

Titanium has good heat resistance. It is suitable for turbine disks and blades of aeroengine compressors and skin of aircraft rear fuselage. Titanium machined parts have high yield ratio, poor plasticity and large deformation springback. At high temperature, the plasticity of titanium alloy is enhanced and the springback is small. Therefore, hot forming process is generally used to manufacture titanium alloy parts. However, for complex titanium alloy parts with irregular shape, simple hot forming process can not be realized. For example, a material in the thrust reverser of an engine has high flanging and the bending radius is less than the allowable small bending radius of the plate. The conventional direct punch and die will crack after hot pressing. Titanium alloy adopts the method of repair welding at the crack.
