ASTM B708 Tantalum Plate

1. Product introduction: This specification covers the standard requirements for tantalum and tantalum alloy plate, sheet, and strip in the following grades: R05200, R05400, R05255, R05252, and R05240. The various tantalum mill products covered by this specification shall be formed with the conventional extrusion, forging, and rolling equipment normally available in metal working plants. Materials shall be made from vacuum-arc or electron-beam melted ingots or powder metallurgy consolidated unalloyed tantalum and shall be supplied in the annealed condition. Chemical analysis shall be conducted to determine the chemical composition of the materials which shall conform to the requirements for carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, iron, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, silicon, titanium, tungsten, and tantalum. The mechanical properties of the materials shall also meet the specified tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation limits as shall be determined by a longitudinal or transverse tension test method.

Tantalum plate products standard

All tantalum sheet and tantalum plate (UNS R05200, UNS R05400), Ta2.5W sheet and Ta2.5W plate (UNS R05252), Ta10W sheet and Ta10W plate (UNS R05255), Ta-40Nb sheet and Ta40Nb plate (UNS R05240) follow ASTM B708.

Tantalum plate production technology

  • Most tantalum plates are produced by cold working methods. And most thick plates are annealed in vacuo. There is no special requirement for the speed of heating and cooling as there is no phase transition. Quadruplex rolling machines are used in the process of annealing. More attention is paid to avoid being scratched during manufacturing process and delivery since Tantalum is a soft metal.

  • Usually start from 150 ~ 300mm tantalum ingot to 80 ~ 100mm thickness plate, then cold rolling from this plate. The compression ratio can be over 95%.

  • The typical rolling is under room temperature or similar to room temperature to avoid developing oxide at surface.

  • In the process of heat rolling, when the temperature reaches 1000˚C, intense oxidation will happen due to recrystallization.


Tantalum plate application

Tantalum is a malleable metal, it can be processed by the method of cold forging, rolling, punching, pulling, spinning, extrusion, bending and so on. Hot processing for tantalum should be operated in the inert gas protection state. The high performance tantalum sheet can be processed into a round cup for six times after the oxidation film is formed on the surface (No anneal during the procedure).Tantalum and tantalum alloy sheet are high temperature resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The chemical stability is similar to glass, while strength and rigidity is comparable with low carbon steel. The high temperature heat intensity is second only to tungsten and tungsten alloys. With all these properties, tantalum and tantalum alloy sheet are excellent materials for chemical preservation and high temperature furnace.

Tantalum sheet application

In the fields of medicine, tantalum sheet can be used in the artificial ears. Its malleability makes the artificial ears suitable for human bodies. And there is almost no difference in appearance from the real ears. In the fields of industry, Tantalum sheet can be processed into cups, caps, tubes, cones, nozzles, etc. by spinning and deep draw. In the fields of electronics, high temperature and reactor container, tantalum sheet are also widely used for many kinds of productions.
