Flat slab or round medium - sized blank made by hammering and stamping. Unlike ordinary metals, tantalum cannot be hot-worked. The recrystallization temperature of tantalum exceeds 1000~C. If heated, excessive oxidation will occur even if a general protective coating is made. What is more serious is that if tantalum is exposed to such a high temperature, not only excessive oxidation occurs on the surface of tantalum, but also oxygen can invade into the atoms inside the matrix, making tantalum brittle. Not only oxygen, but even nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen make tantalum brittle. For the above reasons, tantalum is not usually hot processed. When hot working is necessary, it shall be done with protective coverings or in an inert gas atmosphere.
2. heat treatment
Because tantalum reacts actively with oxygen, it is necessary to avoid heat treatment even in the presence of a little air. Therefore, almost all annealing is carried out in a high vacuum, and the furnace air tightness must be very high. Generally, the heat treatment temperature of tantalum is in the range of 950~1300℃. Tantalum and general tantalum alloys do not undergo phase transformation within this temperature range. The heat treatment is only used for annealing, so the heating temperature and cooling rate are not important. In order to produce complete recrystallization, a longer heat treatment time is preferred.
Commercially produced tantalum is of very high purity. Grains become very large by annealing. The size of crystal grain is determined by cold processing, purity, temperature and process steps. Therefore, temperature control and process control are important means to determine the size of crystallization.
Tantalum, unlike many other metals, must be very clean before heat treatment. If not cleaned very clean, will occur by hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon caused by the surface pollution, become embrittlement (hardening) organization. Because hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon are very active invading elements in the temperature range of tantalum annealing, once contaminated by these elements, in addition to re melting, other ways to remove.
Tantalun tube manufacturing characteristics
Tantalum can be used in a wide range of applications, including welded and seamless tubes. Seamless tubes are made by extrusion, tube reduction, or sheet deep drawing. The welding is made by forming a strip, then forming a tube, and then welding the joints by gas tungsten arc (GTAW).
