Titanium characters 

Titanium is a kind of metal. The performance of titanium is related to the content of impurities such as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. The impurity content of pure titanium iodide is no more than 0.1%, but it has low strength and high plasticity. The properties of 99.5% industrial pure titanium are: density ρ= 4.5g/cm3, melting point 1725 ℃, thermal conductivity λ= 15.24w / (m.k), tensile strength σ B = 539mpa, elongation δ= 25%, reduction of area ψ= 25%, elastic modulus E = 1.078 × 105Mpa, hardness hb195.

  

(1) High specific strength

 

The density of ASTM B348 titanium round bar is generally about 4.5g/cm3, which is only 60% of that of steel. The strength of pure titanium is close to that of ordinary steel. Some high-strength titanium alloys exceed the strength of many alloy structural steels. Therefore, the specific strength (strength / density) of titanium alloy is much higher than that of other metal structural materials. See table 7-1. Parts and components with high unit strength, good rigidity and light weight can be made. At present, titanium alloy is used in aircraft engine components, skeleton, skin, fasteners and landing gear.

 

(2) High thermal strength

 

The service temperature is several Baidu higher than that of aluminum alloy. It can still maintain the required strength at medium temperature and can work for a long time at 450 ~ 500 ℃. These two kinds of titanium alloys still have high specific strength in the range of 150 ℃ ~ 500 ℃, while the specific strength of aluminum alloy decreases significantly at 150 ℃. The working temperature of titanium alloy can reach 500 ℃, while that of aluminum alloy is below 200 ℃.

 

(3) Good corrosion resistance

 

ASTM B348 titanium round bar works in humid atmosphere and seawater, and its corrosion resistance is much better than that of stainless steel; It has strong resistance to pitting corrosion, acid corrosion and stress corrosion; It has excellent corrosion resistance to alkali, chloride, chlorine organic products, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. However, titanium has poor corrosion resistance to reducing oxygen and chromium salt medium.

 

(4) Good low temperature performance

 

ASTM B348 titanium round bar can still maintain its mechanical properties at low and ultra-low temperatures. Titanium alloys with good low temperature performance and very low interstitial elements, such as TA7, can maintain a certain plasticity at - 253 ℃. Therefore, titanium alloy is also an important low temperature structural material.

 

(5) High chemical activity

 

Titanium has great chemical activity and has strong chemical reaction with O, N, h, Co, CO2, water vapor and ammonia in the atmosphere. When the carbon content is more than 0.2%, hard tic will be formed in titanium alloy; When the temperature is high, tin hard surface will also be formed by interaction with n; Above 600 ℃, titanium absorbs oxygen to form a hardened layer with high hardness; With the increase of hydrogen content, embrittlement layer will also be formed. The depth of hard and brittle surface produced by absorbing gas can reach 0.1 ~ 0.15 mm, and the hardening degree is 20% ~ 30%. Titanium also has great chemical affinity and is easy to adhere to the friction surface.

 

(6) Small thermal conductivity and elastic modulus

 

Thermal conductivity of titanium λ= 15.24w / (m.k) is about 1 / 4 of nickel, 1 / 5 of iron and 1 / 14 of aluminum. The thermal conductivity of various titanium alloys is about 50% lower than that of titanium. The elastic modulus of titanium alloy is about 1 / 2 of that of steel, so its rigidity is poor and easy to deform. It is not suitable to make slender rods and thin-walled parts. During cutting, the resilience of the machined surface is very large, about 2 ~ 3 times that of stainless steel, resulting in severe friction, adhesion and bonding wear on the back surface of the tool.

  

 Application of titanium alloy

Titanium alloy has high strength, low density, good mechanical properties, good toughness and corrosion resistance. In addition, titanium alloy has poor process performance and difficult machining. In hot machining, it is very easy to absorb impurities such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon. There is also poor wear resistance and complex production process. The industrial production of titanium began in 1948. The needs of the development of aviation industry make the titanium industry develop at an average annual growth rate of about 8%. At present, the annual output of titanium alloy processing materials in the world has reached more than 40000 tons, and there are nearly 30 kinds of titanium alloy. The titanium alloys used are Ti-6Al-4V , ti-5al-2.5sn and industrial pure titanium (Gr.1, Gr.2,Gr.3 & Gr.4).

 

Titanium alloy is mainly used to make compressor parts of aircraft engine, followed by structural parts of rocket, missile and high-speed aircraft. In the mid-1960s, titanium and its alloys have been applied in general industry, such as making electrodes in electrolytic industry, condensers in power stations, heaters for oil refining and seawater desalination, and environmental pollution control devices. Titanium and its alloys have become a kind of corrosion resistant structural materials. In addition, it is also used to produce hydrogen storage materials and shape memory alloys.
